The Toyota 86 A Sports Car Icon: A Legacy of Performance and Enthusiasm

The Toyota 86 has become an icon in the world of sports cars, celebrated for its rear-wheel drive layout, lightweight design, and exceptional handling capabilities. Since its introduction in 2012, the 86 has captured the hearts of driving enthusiasts with its pure, driving-focused experience that's more about connection with the road than raw power. "The Toyota 86 is a car that's all about the experience of driving," said Paul O'Neill, senior stylist at Toyota's Calty Design Research division. "It's a car that rewards driver input and encourages you to push the limits."

The 86's origins date back to the 2007 iSC concept, a rear-engine, mid-engined, rear-wheel drive sports car that fetched accolades at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show. Designed by Toyota's Calty Design unit in California, the iSC was a glimpse of what would become the 86. A production version of the concept was released in 2012 as a collaboration between Toyota and Subaru. Although initially met with skepticism by some, the 86 has since become a notable sports car that lives up to its promises. Based on the Subaru GR86, the Toyota 86 is distinct with its front and rear suspension tuning, but both are essentially identical with recognizable counterparts in both their styling and feature set.

Design and Performance

One of the key features that set the 86 apart is its lightweight body and construction. Using a production version of Toyota's Global New Architecture (TNGA), the 86's design consists of high-strength steel, aluminum, and some smaller metal elements in strategic areas like the roof and trunk lid to allow the chassis to be very light while retaining its rigidity. This translates into impressive responsiveness when cornering or braking. And make no mistake, the Toyota 86 has good cornering capabilities considering that it is a front engine RWD car. "Being rear-wheel drive provides several advantages including a lower polar mass which can help us better control body roll and balance," said Yoshimasa Koh, 86 project chief engineer at Toyota. "The strategy allows drivers to get more visual, acoustic and tactile feedback about their input."

The engine is a 2.0-liter naturally aspirated, flat-four Boxer 4-cylinder unit delivering decent 205 horsepower in the base and 225 in the more premium SE/ Limited models in 2019. Consequently, motor fuel availability is handicapped, therefore impacting power, "Redline is set at 7,500 rpm," a Toyota official noted, "which, compared to competitor cars, allows it to continuously boost torque. But relevant power can stay on track with decent throttle response." Left-hood opened, allowable wobble post high throttle amount however plausible experience addressed.
